Saving Your Child’s Tooth from Severe Infection
At Van Orman Dental, we prioritize your child’s oral health and comfort. When a baby tooth is severely infected or has extensive decay, a pulpectomy may be necessary to save the tooth and prevent complications. This treatment helps eliminate infection, relieve pain, and preserve the tooth’s function until it naturally falls out.
What Is a Pulpectomy?
A pulpectomy is similar to a root canal but is designed specifically for children’s primary (baby) teeth. It involves the complete removal of infected pulp tissue from the tooth’s crown and roots. After cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, the space is filled with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection, and the tooth is restored with a stainless steel crown for durability.
When Does a Child Need a Pulpectomy?
A pulpectomy is recommended if your child has:
- Severe tooth decay reaching the pulp and roots
- Persistent toothache or sensitivity to hot and cold
- Swelling, abscess, or pus near the tooth
- A traumatic injury causing nerve damage
- Facial swelling or tenderness due to infection
What Happens During a Pulpectomy?
Examination & X-rays:- We take digital X-rays to assess the severity of infection and determine if a pulpectomy is necessary.
Local Anesthesia and sedation (if needed): The area is completely numbed to ensure a pain-free procedure. Sedation may be used for anxious children.
Removing Infected Pulp:- The entire pulp (nerve tissue) is removed from both the crown and roots of the tooth.
Cleaning & Disinfecting the Canals:- The root canals are thoroughly cleaned and sterilized to remove bacteria.
Filling the Canals:- A special medicated filling is placed to prevent reinfection and support the tooth.
Placing a Stainless Steel Crown:– A durable stainless steel crown is placed over the tooth to restore strength and function.
Does a Pulpectomy Hurt?
No! We ensure a completely pain-free experience using local anesthesia and, if necessary, mild sedation. After the procedure, mild soreness is normal but can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Benefits of a Pulpotomy

- Prevents premature tooth loss
- Maintains proper space for adult teeth
- Stops the spread of bacteria to other teeth
- Restores chewing and speaking ability
