Keep Your Smile Straight & Healthy
After completing orthodontic treatment, keeping your teeth in their new position is just as important as straightening them. That’s where retainers come in! A custom-fitted retainer helps prevent your teeth from shifting, ensuring your beautiful smile lasts a lifetime.
At Van Orman Dental, we provide high-quality, comfortable retainers tailored to your needs to maintain your perfectly aligned teeth.
What Is a Retainer?
A retainer is a custom-made dental device worn after orthodontic treatment (such as braces or clear aligners) to keep teeth in their new position. Without a retainer, teeth can gradually shift back, undoing all your hard work!
Removable Retainers
- Hawley Retainers – Made from acrylic and metal wire, adjustable for long-term wear
- Clear Retainers (Essix Retainers) – Nearly invisible, similar to clear aligners, comfortable and discreet
Fixed (Permanent) Retainers
- Bonded to the back of the teeth for continuous support
- Ideal for patients prone to teeth-shifting
- Low maintenance and invisible from the front

Why Are Retainers Important?
- Prevents teeth from shifting after orthodontic treatment
- Maintains proper bite alignment and jaw health
- Protects your investment in orthodontic care
- Can help prevent teeth grinding and minor misalignment issues
- Supports long-term dental health by keeping teeth properly positioned
How Long Should You Wear a Retainer?
The length of time you’ll need to wear a retainer depends on your individual case. Typically:
Full-time wear (except when eating or brushing) is recommended for the first few months to a year.
Nighttime-only wear is often sufficient after the first year.
For lifelong results, wearing your retainer at least a few nights a week is advised.
How to Care for Your Retainer
- Clean it daily – Brush with a soft toothbrush and mild soap (avoid toothpaste, as it can be abrasive).
- Store properly – Keep it in a protective case when not in use.
- Avoid heat exposure – Hot water or leaving it in direct sunlight can warp the material.
- Keep up with dental check-ups – We’ll ensure your retainer remains in good shape and fits well.
